It
was the main gate to enter the walled city, built at
the beginning of the XVIII Century by Engineer Juan
de Herrera y Sotomayor. At those times it was called
the Bridge Gate, due to the one that jointed this area
with the Getsemani Suburb. In 1888 the republican style
tower was added, as it stands today, by the native architect
Luis Felipe Jaspe to hold the four sided clock, and
thus, naming the spot as it is known today and that
has become the symbol of Cartagena.
